Boat Detailing Cost in Hayden: Packages & Pricing

by Sam | Professional Marine Services

"How much does boat detailing cost?" gets a frustrating non-answer on most sites. The honest reply is: it depends, but on knowable things. Once you understand what drives the price and what each package includes, you can budget accurately and avoid paying for services your boat doesn't need. Detailing was our original specialty back in 2010, so here's the straight version.

What detailing packages typically include

Detailing isn't one service. It's a ladder, from a basic wash to full restoration:

Wash & wax (maintenance level)

Exterior wash, a coat of wax for UV protection, basic interior wipe-down. Best for a boat that's already in good shape and just needs upkeep between outings.

Full detail

Everything above plus deep interior cleaning, vinyl and upholstery treatment, metal polishing, and more thorough exterior work. The common choice for a seasonal refresh.

Gel coat restoration / ceramic coating

For oxidized, chalky, or faded gel coat: compounding and polishing to bring back shine, often finished with a ceramic coating for lasting protection. This is restoration, not just cleaning, and it's where condition drives the price.

What boat detailing costs

Detailers usually quote per foot. As a rough national guide: a basic wash runs about $2 to $6 per foot; a wash-and-wax around $10 to $25 per foot; a full detail roughly $20 to $40 per foot; and gel coat / oxidation restoration $25 to $70 per foot depending on how far the finish has gone (ceramic coating is a further add-on). In real terms, a wash-and-wax on a 25-foot boat often lands near $500, while a full oxidation restoration on a neglected hull can exceed $2,500.

Please note: The figures above are national industry averages for general budgeting only. They are not Professional Marine's prices. Call (208) 964-2431 for our current rates and a quote on your specific boat.

The factors that move the price:

  • Boat size: more square footage, more time; the single biggest factor
  • Current condition: a maintained boat details fast; heavy oxidation takes far longer
  • Level of service: a wash-and-wax vs. full gel coat restoration are different jobs
  • Add-ons: ceramic coating, heavy stain or mildew removal, upholstery treatment

Why condition matters more than you'd think

The same 21-foot boat can cost very differently to detail depending on how it's been cared for. Regular maintenance detailing keeps you at the cheaper end of the ladder; letting oxidation set in pushes you toward restoration, which is far more labor-intensive. And freshwater boating doesn't make you exempt: UV fade, mineral deposits, dock scuffs, and mildew from storage all still build up. Routine detailing isn't just cosmetic; it protects the gel coat and your resale value, and keeps future bills lower.

Getting an accurate quote

Because size and condition swing the price so much, the only honest quote comes after someone sees the boat (in person or from clear photos). We'll assess it and give you an itemized estimate rather than a vague ballpark. Contact us for a quote. Learn more about our boat detailing services.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I detail my boat?

Wash regularly through the season, get a full detail once or twice a year, and handle gel coat restoration only when oxidation sets in. Staying on top of it keeps you at the cheaper end of the pricing ladder and protects resale value.

What's the difference between detailing and gel coat restoration?

Detailing cleans and protects a surface that's still in good shape. Restoration uses compounding and multi-step polishing to fix oxidized, chalky, or faded gel coat. That's skilled, time-intensive work, which is why it costs more.

Does freshwater boating mean I need less detailing?

No. You skip saltwater corrosion, but UV fade, mineral deposits, dock scuffs, and storage mildew still take a toll on North Idaho boats. Freshwater is easier on a hull, not maintenance-free.

Why do you need to see my boat before quoting?

Because size and condition swing the price dramatically: a well-kept hull and a heavily oxidized one of the same length are different jobs. An accurate, itemized quote needs eyes on the boat or clear photos.
